The Amazing Race - Dream of a Lifetime!

Dr. Maya always dreamt of going on The Amazing Race (TAR), years before she even went to a casting call. She knew it would be perfect for her love of travel, zest for life, and pushing herself beyond imaginable limits! In 2013, Dr. Maya was still in graduate school, watching ice cream melt and writing about theories on how to control its melt behavior. In September of that year, she was a little distracted in lab and was curious on when TAR was coming back on TV. Amy, also in the lab at the time, was laughing at all the excitement Maya was engaging in about TAR. Maya expressed her LOVE for The Amazing Race as she always wanted to go on it with her future husband. Amy knew Maya was not dating and clearly not married, so she was just being humored by it all. With all the talk about TAR, Maya decided to inquire further to determine if TAR happened to have a casting call in the near future. Low and behold, there was a casting call in downtown Chicago, IL (about 2.5 hrs away from Madison, WI) on October 12th. This was perfect timing as Maya was running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 13th. With much excitement, she new she had to try out, but seeing that her future husband was nowhere in sight, she had to think of another plan for a Race partner. And well, with all the talking that she and Amy were doing, she simply said, “We should try out for The Amazing Race…I don’t think there have ever been two female food scientist, getting their PhDs in ice cream and candy, to run The Amazing Race!” With a little convincing, Amy was on board and less than a month later, they were standing in line with hundreds of other hopefuls waiting their turn for a 1-minute casting call that led to a dream of a lifetime.

Amy and Maya went through months and months of interviews and on March 21, 2014 they got the call of a lifetime - they were indeed going on The Amazing Race!! June 2014, the #SweetScientists were off to run the most epic Race around the world!!! With a live start in NYC (USA), they traversed the world and went to St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands) London and Oxford (England), Lerwick (Scotland), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Malmo (Sweden), Marrakech (Morocco), Palermo (Sicily), Valletta (Malta), Singapore, Manila (Philippines), and Los Angeles (USA) in only 3 weeks. The #SweetScientists were considered the true underdogs as prior to the last leg they never came in first and were often in the middle (or back) of the pack. But Amy and Maya stayed true to who they are, ran the Race with pure joy and excitement, never gave up, learned from their mistakes, and came in first when it mattered most. With only winning the last leg of The Amazing Race, Amy and Maya became the winners of Season 25 and the 3rd female-female team to win The Amazing Race!
